Today there are hundreds of technologies that solve varied security and management problems, and new solutions are introduced daily to solve problems that have yet to be discovered. IT security and operations are drowning in this cycle of evaluating new products and vendors, performing the R&D to select the right product, purchasing this product, and integrating it with all of the other security technologies. Most companies remain insecure, not because they lack great technology but because they lack the time and money to deploy and manage it.

Enter the cloud. Instead of a business permanently hosting their own servers and applications, they can consume these IT services as needed from the cloud. Doing so lowers costs, reduces the total server count needed, ensures the latest software version is running, and automatically rebalances workload as usage ebbs and flows.

17 May 2011 - Smiths Detection today announces a €16 million contract to  provide advanced X-ray systems for security checkpoints at Berlin’s new Brandenburg International Airport, scheduled to open in 2012.

The order from the German Interior Ministry is for the Advanced Threat Identification X-ray (aTiX) systems, HI-SCAN 6040 aTiX and HI-SCAN 7555 aTiX, combined with innovative checkpoint modules for faster passenger throughput, and other security equipment.

Cherif Rizkalla, Chief Commercial Officer of Smiths Detection, said: “This latest order from Germany underlines the success of our advanced detection technologies in meeting the stricter EU security requirements for detecting current and future threats.”

Smiths Detection’s aTiX was the first Liquid Explosive Detection system to receive EU Standard 2 Type C certification in preparation for the phased easing of the liquids ban in hand luggage. aTiX captures multiple views of luggage in a single sweep and features automatic explosives and liquid detection. Its software algorithms can be updated to detect evolving threats.
